We love #22: Finishing 7-year projects

Lizzy was 7 the summer after John was born. And she wanted to make him a quilt. It did not take her long to piece this quilt or sketch pictures, the hold up was waiting for me to embroider her cute pictures. She did stitch the hand above.

I love this longhorn.

I think when John was three I finally got around to embroidering it. The next problem was finding a suitable back. As a baby John had a blanket with a chambray back. He called his blanket Ya Ya. He carried Ya Ya with him everywhere until it dwindled to the size of a handkerchief. I was looking for a fabric with a similar feel. My friend Christy gave me one of her husband's old shirts. It passed the Ya Ya test when John immediately put it up to his cheek and sighed--Ya Ya. Using the shirt for the back had the bonus of two pockets to stash treasures in.

Last week I finally finished the binding. Now John is seven the same age as when Lizzy started this blanket. But not too old--to appreciate his new Ya Ya.

P.S. Like John's blanket, I intend to finish our "Love Posts" even though February ends today. There's just six more to go. I promise I won't take 7 years to finish.

I like 'extended' projects-- I have a few of them sitting around my house. I love all the Texas touches.

Ah, ya-ya. Glad he got a new one :)

I cut out material for a quilt for Savannah, and never got around to making it. Luckily my mom works a bit faster than I do and makes quilts for all my kids.

OH! As soon as I saw the first photo on this post, I got so happy! I'm so glad John is loving Marc's shirt fabric!

I'd love to see a photo of the back of the quilt. How did you use the shirt? Is it pieced, too?

Do you think I can send you the quilt we started when you were pregnant with John and I was pregnant with Lulu?
